Resumo | With collaboration of several national and international institutions, a team of Brazilian scientists is co-ordinating efforts on development of the Brazilian Decimetric Array (BDA), the unique radio interferometer in Latin America, which employs modern radio interferometry techniques. The BDA will produce high spatial and time resolution images of radio sources with high dynamic range, including solar radio images of lower corona where energy release to solar flare takes place, also with application to space weather forecasting. The instrument is being developed in three phases, since 2001. The Phase I (named Prototype of BDA) consisting of 5 element alt-azimuth mounted parabolic dishes of 4-m diameter, having baselines up to 216 meters in East-West direction, operating at (1.2 1.7) GHz, has been successfully completed in 2005 and it is in regular operation at INPE´s campus located in Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil (Longitude -45 0´ 20´´ W Latitude -22 41´ 19´´ S). Hardware and software were successfully tested for almost one year for rough operating. Solar and non-solar observations are carried out for 120 days in 2005. Also has been obtained one dimensional brightness temperature map of the sun at 1.6 GHz. In the Phase II, more 21 antennas will be added to the array. These 26 antennas will be laid out in a T shaped configuration, with maximum baselines of 252 meters and 162 meters, in East-West and South directions, respectively. The frequency range will be increased to 1.2-1.7, 2.8 and 5.6 GHz and corresponding spatial resolution will be < 3, 1.5 minutes of arc and 45 sec of arc, respectively. This will be useful for Brazilian Space Program and radio astronomy programs on going. In its final configuration (Phase III), that is scheduled to be concluded in 2012, the BDA will have 38 elements, distributed in a \"T\" shape array, with baselines up to 2268 m in East-West direction and 1170 m in the South direction. Here, we present the status of the BDA project. Solar observations carried out using the Prototype, in the frequency of 1.6 GHz, and details of the instrumentation under development for Phases II and III will be presented. Initial results of solar and non solar observations will be presented. |
